The OPT3005 is a sensor that measures visible light intensity. The sensor's spectral response closely matches the photopic response of the human eye, while providing strong rejection of 850nm and 940nm infrared light across a wide range of incident angles.
The OPT3005 is a single-chip illuminance meter that measures light intensity as perceived by the human eye. The device's accurate spectral response and strong infrared rejection enable the OPT3005 to precisely measure light intensity as seen by the human eye, independent of the light source and stray light generated by 850nm or 940nm active illumination. The strong infrared rejection also helps maintain high accuracy in industrial designs that require the sensor to be mounted beneath dark glass, particularly when 850nm or 940nm active near-infrared illumination is used. Such systems often produce large amounts of near-infrared stray reflections from cover glass, which can affect light sensor measurements. The OPT3005's accurate optical filtering is verified to effectively reject such near-infrared stray reflections, enabling true measurement of ambient light as perceived by the human eye. Designed for systems that create light-based experiences for humans, the OPT3005 is an ideal replacement for photodiodes, photoresistors, and other ambient light sensors with poorer human-eye matching and inferior infrared rejection.
The built-in full-scale setting feature eliminates the need for manual full-scale range selection, enabling measurements from 20mlux to 166klux — representing a 23-bit effective dynamic range for light measurements.
Digital operation provides flexibility for system integration. Measurements can be continuous or single-shot. The control and interrupt system features autonomous operation, allowing the processor to enter sleep mode while the sensor searches for suitable wake-up events and reports them via the interrupt pin. Digital output is reported through a two-wire serial interface compatible with I²C and SMBus.
The OPT3005's low power consumption and low supply voltage capability extend battery life in battery-powered systems.
